- Jordi Alba
Jordi Alba is the current established left-back for Spain after Joan Capdevilla’s monopoly of the position officially ended after the 2010 World Cup – more of a predominant winger, Alba can play at left-back and is very similar to Andre Santos with his attacking traits and would be a great buy for Wenger and was even linked with Arsenal in the past however, getting Alba on a short term basis, such as a loan, would be unlikely as he’s a key player for Valencia while buying him would leave Wenger in a predicament as he’ll be stuck with three decent fullbacks once everyone is fit.
- Wayne Bridge
Wayne Bridge seems to be everyone’s predicted choice for Wenger’s fullback crisis and why not? He’s frozen out at Manchester City, is looking to leave, and has plenty of Premier League experience but there are some negatives and reasons why this signing can’t happen – Bridge has astronomical wages at City and Arsenal would never be able to match them – this is unless he decides to take a pay cut. Another negative is that ever since the John Terry incident, Bridge hasn’t really emulated his old form and isn’t getting any younger either. Add to this, his last Premier League game was on May 2011 so he is bound to be rusty.
- Aly Cissokho
Cissokho seems like a likely option for Wenger – he’s French, quick and intelligent and has recently admitted to a desire to move to England – ‘This week, I will speak with the Lyon staff. I reckon I prefer England, but for now, there is nothing done.‘ Metro has also reported that Lyon President, Jean-Michel Aulas has already sanctioned Cissokho’s exit in January, but would prefer for the 24-year-old to go on loan first, in order to up his price tag and kick start a summer auction. This would be ideal for Wenger as he just needs a left-back in the short-term and Cissokho fits the bill, even though he would be cup-tied for the Champions League.
- Kieran Richardson
A product of the Manchester United academy, as much as Arsenal fans wouldn’t want him at the Emirates, Richardson would be great for the club – it’s only for a 4 month period, he has plenty of Premier League experience, plays week in and week out for Sunderland and is a major attacking threat – the only setback to this deal is whether new Sunderland manager, Martin O’Neill would send out a player of Richardson’s importance out on loan during the transfer window.
- Maxwell
Already below Abidal and Adriano in the pecking order, Barcelona‘s £2 million rated Maxwell would be a great signing in the short-term for Arsenal – vastly experienced, looking for first team action, and only 30 years old. A loan signing for the Brazilian would be ideal but it would be worth noting that Barcelona would rather offload him to raise funds.
