RELATED: Horror Movies That Need Prequels

With so many horror movies released in the last ten years, it’s easy to forget some of these fantastic 2012 horror flicks. Many of them have actually aged surprisingly well and still hold up even a decade later. From zombies to vampires, some of the best 2012 horror movies still have a lot to offer viewers even today!

5 Byzantium

Unlike other vampire movies, such as those about the most famous vampire, Dracula, Byzantium mostly flew under the radar. However, it’s just as worth watching today as it was at the time of its release since the topics it deals with remain constant. The movie focuses on two female vampires (a mother and a daughter) who are doing their best to survive in a world not inclined to help them. The vampire society, as portrayed in the movie, is one of its fascinating aspects.

Also standing out are the performances by Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan. If that isn’t enough to attract the audience, they should also know that none other than Neil Jordan directed the movie. That Jordan already had an iconic vampire movie under his belt - Interview with the Vampire (1994) based on Anne Rice’s novel - certainly seemed to help here. Byzantium is more civil than Interview with the Vampire, however, and it focuses on the present day, but both movies create a strong atmosphere.

4 The Cabin In The Woods

The Cabin in the Woods is one of the movies that effortlessly switches between genres. In the beginning, it seems like a comedy mixed with a bit of science fiction, but as the story progresses, it becomes a horror. And unlike other movies that allow the heroes to have a happy ending, The Cabin in the Woods does no such thing. The intense atmosphere, the threat that pursues the heroes as well as the fact that they’re outnumbered all make for a memorable experience.

It helps that the movie is much smarter and more complex than it originally seems to be. The actors are also excellent, from the main cast to supporting parts, such as Sigourney Weaver. The Cabin in the Woods is one of the most original horror movies of all time and the less viewers know about its plot before they watch it the better. They might easily rob themselves of a big surprise. Those who haven’t watched the movie yet and would like to do so can stream it on Netflix.

3 Grabbers

There are many enemies people can face in horror movies, including vampires, werewolves, demons, and ghosts. However, bloodthirsty sea monsters aren’t as common. That’s not the only thing that makes Grabbers different from the majority of horror movies though. Another difference is its setting. The story takes place in a small village on an island near Ireland. That means the audience gets to see the local beautiful nature… but also that the heroes have a much harder time escaping the threat that’s coming. Luckily, they have a secret weapon… they find out that the monsters don’t attack those who are really drunk!

This results in a plan to get everyone so drunk that they can barely see and only then take on the monsters. As the plot suggests, Grabbers doesn’t take itself too seriously and tip-toes along the line between a horror movie and a comedy. Fortunately, it manages to combine both genres in an organic way, so it’s hilarious at times and scary at others. With only eighteen thousand ratings on IMDb, it’s also one of the most underappreciated horror movies ever made, which makes it a must-watch for all fans of horror comedies who want to discover something new.

2 Frankeenweenie

Even though there have been multiple Frankenstein movie adaptations over the years, Frankeenweenie, the main hero of this Tim Burton movie, is easily the cutest. Despite the fact that he died and was brought back to life by his owner, Victor, who just couldn’t leave his beloved dog dead, Frankeenweenie is one of the good guys… or, in this case, pets. It’s not the first time Tim Burton directed this story either, as he already made a short live-action movie of the same name in 1982, thirty years before the animated version came out.

The 2012 Frankeenweenie continues to work as it has both beautiful animation (for those who admire the style of Tim Burton’s movies), sympathetic heroes, and a touching story. After all, losing a pet is hard, so Victor’s actions make a lot of sense. While this movie isn’t as scary as other horror pieces, which makes it suitable for children as well, it does leave a strong impression and no fan of dog movies slash animated horrors should miss out on watching it.

1 Cockneys Vs Zombies

Zombies are easily one of the most popular horror creatures. Movies often approach them seriously, but that’s not the case in this underrated British piece. The movie centers around two different age groups - young friends and a group of seniors from an elderly home - who join forces in the middle of a zombie apocalypse in London and decide to shoot, hack, or otherwise force their way to safety. That makes for a lot of fun and unexpected situations in which the heroes confront the zombies, regardless of their age.

There aren’t that many zombie comedies and even less that would give space to older heroes, which is another reason why Cockneys vs Zombies is well worth watching. The dark British humor doesn’t disappoint either and setting the story in London also makes it different from the hoards of American zombie flicks. The actors might not be all that well-known to the American audience, with Harry Treadway (Star Trek: Picard) probably being the most recognizable face, but that doesn’t make their performances any less solid and fun to watch.
